Did you see the news about Pat Robertson this morning? Again, it was something he said that put him in the headlines once more. I realize that whenever someone the media doesn't like says something that the media doesn't like, it's bound to become a prominent story. This time - as at many other times - Pat Robertson has said something that should make deep and committed followers of Jesus cringe.
It was during the "Bring It On" segment of yesterday's show. Pat is fired a series of viewer questions and he answers. I'm not sure if he answers on the spot or if he's seen the questions ahead of time. I sure hope it's the former! . . . especially in light of one of the answers he gave yesterday. The question was about Alzheimer's Disease and a spouse. During his answer (which you can watch in the first few minutes of the video embedded below), he's interrupted by a co-host who has the same question I have. Still, Robertson stumbles around and comes up with something that's deeply disturbing.
Our vows - unless we've rewritten them - define a love-commitment that goes on and on and on - in sickness and in health - till death do us part. I know Pat speaks for some, but I certainly don't think he's articulating the will of God in his answer this time around.

Maybe Pat has a touch of Alzheimer's because "they say crazy things" (according to him).
It's sad and sends the wrong message to those who take his words to heart.
Hello John, your words are well spoken. From your website I see that you paradoxically remain a Christian Youth Leader, and at the same time a proud member of "The Savage Nation", and are still "unapologetically politically conservation".
Walt, I'm afraid that there is a "circle the wagons" approach going on among our Christian church leaders whenever the likes of Robertson and the below ilk speak out with totally ignorant and biblically unsubstantiated hatred and lunacy.
Unfortunately a parallel can be drawn to the Roman Catholic Church’s brotherhood, all the way up to the pope, remaining mute, while knowing that their fellow priests are raping and sodomizing children.
For example, where was the Christian outrage for:
“All Muslims are programmed to kill and we can thus never negotiate with any of them.” … “God caused Hurricane Katrina to wipe out New Orleans because it had a gay pride parade the week before and was filled with sexual sin.” – John Hagee
Where was the Christian outrage?
American Evangelical Lou Engle while in California supporting Proposition 8, called homosexuality a "spirit of lawlessness" and called for "martyrs" to become "God's Avengers of Blood" to stop the "homosexual agenda" at all cost.
He also recently held The Call Prayer Event in Uganda where he praised the country's "courage" and "righteousness" in promoting the horrific Anti-Homosexuality "Kill the Gays" Bill. The bill calls for gays to be executed, says "known Ugandan homosexuals" abroad should be extradited back to Uganda for "punishment", and that people in Uganda must report anybody known to have committed a homosexual act within 24 hours.
Where was the Christian outrage?
“No disrespect to our Native American friends, but this is where you hang a bloody scalp over the gallery rail. You hang these four bloody Republican scalps over the Senate rail and every other Republican senator looks up and sees those scalps and says, ‘my gosh, I’ll be hanging up there beside them if I don’t stay with this pro-family stuff.’ And that’s exactly what has to happen.” – Noted Christian activist David Barton’s comments on the four New York State Senators voting for gay marriage equality rights.
Where was the Christian outrage?
“I wish that every single young person in America would be able to be under his (Barton’s) tutelage and understand something about who we really are as a nation. I almost wish that there would be like a simultaneous telecast and all Americans would be forced –forced! – at gunpoint no less, to listen to every David Barton message, and I think our country would be better for it. I wish it would happen.” – Mike Huckabee, ordained minister and 2008 potential presidential nominee.
Where was the Christian outrage?
“Homosexuals are not monogamous, they want to destroy the institution of marriage. It (gay marriage) will destroy marriage. It will destroy the earth" – James Dobson
Where was the Christian outrage?
Unless we get medically lucky, in three or four years, one of the options (to eradicate AIDS) will be the extermination of homosexuals." – Paul Cameron, renowned Christian psychologist, expelled from the American Psychological Association for non-cooperation in an ethics investigation involving misrepresentation of social science research.
Where was the Christian outrage?
Tony Perkins heads the Family Research Council, which has been designated a hate group by the esteemed Southern Poverty Law Center.
Where was the Christian outrage?
This total lack of Christian outrage is nothing short of blasphemy.
And here I thought that gay marriage was at fault and responsible for the end of traditional marriage. Who would have thought it was Alzheimer's? Perhaps someone should inform James Dobson of this.
And in regard to John Hagee's belief that God caused Hurricane Katrina to devastate and take the lives of thousands, due to a gay pride parade held a week earlier, yea that makes sense, but why didn't God cause the catastrophe DURING the parade? It would have definitely drowned more gays and left no doubt of His intention. Perhaps He got the dates mixed up.
By the way, did any good God-fearing Christians drown? I doubt it. God doesn’t make mistakes.
Walt, God fully understands.
"I certainly don't think he's articulating the will of God.", you say.
I,not one to mince words, find Robertson's words downright despicable and should be outright labeled as such by all true followers of Christ.
Failure by Christian leaders to publicly and wholeheartedly condemn his outrageous, hateful remarks placing the blame for 9/11 on gays, feminists, the ACLU etc. was deplorable, and now this. Again our Christian leaders, who have absolutely no problem in broadcasting the damnation of premarital sex, will again remain cowardly silent and dare not utter one word in condemnation of him saying,“He should divorce his wife (who suffers from Alzheimer’s), and start all over.” Where does the “sanctity of marriage”, and “family values”, come in here ?
Do you have any idea how the silence of our Christian leaders on these matters reflects upon us as followers? To non-Christians and Christians, it makes us look complicit in its gross absurdity, and then detrimentally reflects on our other beliefs being absurd as well. It’s called the “halo effect”, and the silence is interpreted as consent.
Can’t just one Christian leader have the decency to forcefully publicly and without constraint, condemn this man’s words ? Just ONE ?
