One of the guidelines I use is the proportion of time I spend reading my friends posts, to the amount of time I spend posting/writing about myself. I look at it no differently than a traditional face to face conversation. If I am expecting to be a role model and mentor, I need to listen more and talk less.Butchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12039849627509477307noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1735040292604331611.post-1417250452334323962011-10-13T20:26:50.418-04:002011-10-13T20:26:50.418-04:00I am a youth worker who very recently gave up Face...I am a youth worker who very recently gave up Facebook completely. It was something I had wrestled with for years, but finally decided after teaching a class on Media at my church. There are just so many negative things that happen on there that I felt I needed to take a stand. I was really worried about the effect it would have on my ministry and wasn't sure I was making the right decision, but thus far it has done nothing but good things. I don't think everyone should give it up, but if you feel convicted don't be afraid to take the plunge!Aaronnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1735040292604331611.post-37982659020750993352011-10-13T15:14:50.056-04:002011-10-13T15:14:50.056-04:00I think that as a youth worker you must realize th...I think that as a youth worker you must realize that real, incarnational, face to face interaction can never be replicated or replaced by social media. It is tempting to fall into the trap of believing, that, since your youth are all on facebook that is the best way to make a connection with them. When the vast majority (if not all) value human interaction much more than a wall post. You must be intentional about getting out from behind the computer screen and in front of the teens where they physically are.Matthttp://kbcstudents.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1735040292604331611.post-91200039836227217172011-10-13T12:49:36.055-04:002011-10-13T12:49:36.055-04:00I like to think about Social Media as an Airport: ...I like to think about Social Media as an Airport: No one goes to an airport for vacation, but they go there in order to get to their destination. I try to remind myself to use Facebook (I don't Twitter, since none of my teenagers use it) as an "airport" to engage in conversations that wouldn't otherwise be opened up to me. This also helps me filter through similar questions that you raised above ("Is this helpful?" "Why am I posting this?" etc.). If what I post is an end-in-itself, then it's probably not something I really need to be posting.

My wife, who teaches 8th Grade in the public school, hates Facebook because of all the ways she sees it breaking down actual communication and how it feeds into bullying. So I usually ask myself, "Will Tracy make fun of me for posting this, or will she recognize the value of this?" That's another great filter for me when figuring out what to post and what not to.Mike McGarryhttp://www.crosswalking.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1735040292604331611.post-47519043736406725502011-10-13T12:00:53.139-04:002011-10-13T12:00:53.139-04:00So. . . Had a great follow-up message from Kevin Vinay. . . via Facebook I might add! As I read through Kevin's comments he clarified that he's most interested in examinging the best ways to use social media in his ministry. We'll get to that tomorrow with some general guidelines. It seems that Kevin is already being very thoughtful about these things and has some great advice based on some of the practices he and his team have already adopted. I'm going to look for a way to share those ideas with you all in an upcoming post.Walt Muellerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16502588185280592205noreply@blogger.com
